The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.
The Rechabites were a nomadic clan descended from Jonadab (also called Jehonadab), who lived around 840 BC and commanded his family to abstain from wine, farming, and city life. Jeremiah used them as an object lesson during the reign of King Jehoiakim (around 605-598 BC) to show Judah how faithful obedience should look. God had been persistently calling His people to repentance through various prophets, but they consistently ignored His warnings.
