Jehoiakim became king of Judah around 609 BC after his father Josiah died in battle. Unlike his righteous father Josiah, Jehoiakim was known for his wickedness and heavy taxation of the people. This was a turbulent time as the Babylonian Empire was rising to power and would soon threaten Jerusalem.
