This verse is part of God's prophecy through Isaiah regarding the Assyrian king Sennacherib, who had surrounded Jerusalem with his massive army around 701 BC. King Hezekiah had prayed desperately for God's help, and God responded with this promise that the Assyrian army would retreat without capturing Jerusalem. This prophecy was fulfilled when God's angel destroyed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night, forcing Sennacherib to return to Assyria in defeat.
