This verse comes during the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem in 701 BC, when King Sennacherib's massive army surrounded the city and seemed unstoppable. God spoke this promise through the prophet Isaiah to King Hezekiah, assuring him that Jerusalem would not fall. The reference to David recalls God's eternal covenant with David that his dynasty would continue and that Jerusalem would remain the holy city.
