This command was given to the Israelites as part of the Mosaic Law around 1400 BC, when they were establishing their nation after leaving Egypt. In the ancient Near East, witchcraft and sorcery were common practices often associated with worshiping false gods and seeking power through supernatural means that opposed God's authority. The Israelites were called to be completely separate from these practices as they followed the one true God.
