This refers to the golden calf incident at Mount Sinai (Horeb) when Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments. While Moses was on the mountain for 40 days, the Israelites became impatient and convinced Aaron to make a golden calf to worship, breaking their covenant with God almost immediately after making it. God's anger was so intense that He considered wiping them out entirely, but Moses interceded for the people.
