In the Book of Numbers, the Israelites had been led out of Egypt by Moses and were camped at the border of the Promised Land, Canaan. After the spies returned with a report of formidable enemies, the people rebelled against God and Moses, expressing fear and doubt instead of faith. As a consequence, God decreed that this unfaithful generation would wander in the wilderness for forty years until they died, and their children would suffer the repercussions of their parents' disobedience.
