This event occurred at Gilgal after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into Canaan. An entire generation of men born during the 40 years of wilderness wandering had not been circumcised, so Joshua circumcised them to restore their covenant relationship with God before conquering the land. The healing period was necessary because circumcision would have temporarily made the men unable to fight.
