For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:

In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, the people of Judah had turned away from God, leading to the Babylonian invasion and destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. After this catastrophe, some Jews fled to Egypt hoping to avoid further judgment, but Jeremiah delivered God's message that their disobedience would follow them. In this verse, God warns that He will bring the same punishments, war, famine, and disease, to those in Egypt as He did to Jerusalem.
