For thus saith the LORD touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:
Shallum (also known as Jehoahaz) was made king after his father Josiah died in battle against Pharaoh Neco in 609 BC. However, he only ruled for three months before Pharaoh Neco deposed him and took him captive to Egypt. This prophecy confirmed that despite any hopes the people might have had, their young king would die in exile and never see his homeland again.
