In the time of the patriarchs, such as Judah, ancient Israelite society followed a custom called levirate marriage, where a man was expected to marry his deceased brother's widow to continue his brother's family line and provide an heir. In this story, Onan, Judah's son, was supposed to fulfill this duty for his brother Er's widow, Tamar, but he deliberately avoided it by wasting his seed, which was viewed as a selfish act against God's design for family and inheritance.
