Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
This commandment was given to Moses on Mount Sinai as part of the Ten Commandments, shortly after the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, where idol worship was prevalent among surrounding cultures. God was establishing a covenant with His people to set them apart from pagan practices, emphasizing that He alone is the invisible Creator worthy of worship. By forbidding graven images, the command protected the Israelites from the spiritual dangers of attributing divine power to man-made objects.
