This occurs during the famous parting of the Red Sea, when the Israelites were fleeing Egypt after 400 years of slavery. The Egyptian army had pursued them with chariots and soldiers, trapping the Israelites between the army and the sea. God had been leading the Israelites with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night as visible signs of His presence.
