In the biblical narrative of 2 Samuel, King David had recently committed grave sins by committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging the murder of her husband, Uriah, to cover it up. God, displeased with David's actions, sent the prophet Nathan to confront the king and bring him to repentance. Nathan used a parable about two men in a city to subtly expose David's wrongdoing and prepare him for conviction.
