This verse occurs during Jehu's violent purge of King Ahab's family line around 841 BC. God had commanded through the prophet Elisha that Ahab's entire household be destroyed because of their wickedness and idol worship. Jehu, newly anointed as king of Israel, was systematically eliminating all potential rivals and fulfilling God's judgment against the house of Ahab.
