This event occurred in 597 BC when Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon besieged Jerusalem. Jehoiachin had only been king of Judah for three months when he chose to surrender rather than see his city destroyed. This surrender led to the first major deportation of Jewish leaders and skilled workers to Babylon, beginning the period known as the Babylonian exile.
