This occurred in 597 BC when Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and deported King Jehoiachin along with many nobles and craftsmen. The magnificent golden vessels and furnishings that Solomon had crafted for the temple centuries earlier were now being destroyed as judgment for Judah's persistent disobedience to God. This was the first of two major deportations, with the complete destruction of Jerusalem coming about a decade later.
