Jehoash (also called Joash) became king around 835 BC after his grandmother Athaliah was overthrown and killed. Athaliah had murdered most of the royal family to seize power, but Jehoash was secretly saved as a baby and hidden in the temple for six years by the high priest Jehoiada and his wife. When he was crowned at age seven, it marked the restoration of David's royal line to the throne of Judah.
