Athaliah was the wicked queen mother who had murdered most of the royal family to seize power in Judah, ruling for six years around 841-835 BC. However, the infant prince Joash had been secretly rescued and hidden in the temple. When Joash was seven years old, the priest Jehoiada organized a coup that placed the rightful king on the throne and executed the usurper Athaliah.
