This occurred around 841 BC after King Ahaziah of Judah was killed during Jehu's revolution in Israel. Athaliah was the daughter of the wicked King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel, and she had married into Judah's royal family. Her massacre of the royal family was an attempt to eliminate any legitimate heirs so she could rule Judah herself, which she did for six years.
