This verse describes the death of King Ahab of Israel during a battle against the Syrians at Ramoth-gilead around 853 BC. Earlier in the chapter, the prophet Micaiah had warned Ahab that God would allow lying spirits to deceive his prophets and lead him to his death in this battle. Ahab had disguised himself to avoid fulfilling the prophecy, but was struck by a random arrow.
