Jabesh-gilead was a town east of the Jordan River whose people had been rescued by Saul early in his reign when they were under siege by the Ammonites. This was one of Saul's first great victories as king, and the people there remained loyal to him throughout his troubled reign. The Philistines had killed Saul and his sons in battle and shamefully displayed their bodies on the walls of Beth-shan.
