And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
In the biblical narrative, King Saul was commanded by God through the prophet Samuel to completely destroy the Amalekites as punishment for their ancient attacks on Israel during the Israelites' exodus. However, Saul only partially obeyed by defeating the Amalekites in battle but sparing King Agag and the best of the livestock, which directly led to this defensive response from Saul. This incident highlights the tension between human kingship and divine authority in early Israel.
