This is part of God's response to King David's desire to build a permanent temple in Jerusalem to replace the portable tabernacle. David had expressed this wish through the prophet Nathan, but God declined David's offer, explaining that David had been a man of war and had shed much blood. Instead, God promised that David's son Solomon, who would reign in peace, would be the one to construct the temple.
