This verse is spoken by a young Egyptian slave who had been left behind by Amalekite raiders when he became sick. David and his men found him and nursed him back to health, and in gratitude, he revealed the locations his Amalekite masters had attacked. The Amalekites had been conducting widespread raids across the southern territories of Israel, including burning Ziklag where David and his men had been living under Philistine protection.
