This verse is part of King David's organization of the priests into 24 divisions that would take turns serving in the temple. Each group would serve for a week at a time, twice a year, ensuring orderly worship and that all priestly families had opportunity to serve. This system continued through the time of Jesus, as we see with Zechariah (John the Baptist's father) who belonged to the division of Abijah.
