And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
The LORD your God will drive out those nations ahead of you gradually, bit by bit. You won't be able to destroy them all at once, or else the wild animals would multiply and become a problem for you.
God is explaining that He will remove Israel's enemies slowly and strategically, not all at once, to prevent the land from becoming overrun with dangerous wild animals.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is delivering God's laws and instructions to the Israelites as they stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land after their exodus from Egypt. God commanded them to displace the Canaanite nations gradually rather than all at once to prevent the land from becoming overrun by wild animals, which could pose a threat to the Israelites' safety and settlement. This approach highlights God's practical wisdom in ensuring the long-term habitability of the land for His chosen people.
