But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;
But your wives, your children, and your livestock (I know you have a lot of animals) will stay in the cities I have given you.
Moses is telling the men that while they go to war, their families and animals will remain safe in the cities God has provided for them.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is recounting the Israelites' journey and conquests as they prepare to enter the Promised Land, specifically addressing how God allocated lands east of the Jordan River to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh because these areas were ideal for their large herds of cattle. These tribes had requested to settle there, but God required their men to join the fight for the rest of Canaan, while ensuring their families and possessions remained safe. This verse highlights God's provision and the practical arrangements for the Israelites' security during their military campaigns.
