📚 Historical Context
This verse comes as Moses is organizing the Israelite tribes for conquest of the Promised Land. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had requested to settle east of the Jordan River where the land was good for their large herds. Moses agreed, but required their fighting men to help the other tribes conquer the land west of the Jordan first.
