And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.
And pigs, because they have split hooves but don't chew cud, are unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their dead bodies.
God is telling the Israelites that pigs are considered unclean animals that they shouldn't eat or touch when dead.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of ancient Israel, God gave the Israelites specific dietary laws through Moses as part of the covenant at Mount Sinai, which was meant to distinguish them as a holy people among surrounding nations. These laws, including the prohibition on eating pork, emphasized ritual purity and likely promoted health by avoiding animals that could carry diseases in that era. This command was embedded in a broader set of instructions in Deuteronomy, which served as a renewal of the covenant before entering the Promised Land.
