But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:
Instead, you must go to the place that the LORD your God will choose from all your tribes as the place where His name will dwell, that will be His home. You must seek out that place and go there.
God is telling His people that they must worship Him only at the specific place He will choose, not just anywhere they want.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is delivering God's laws to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land after years of wandering in the wilderness. This verse specifically addresses the need for centralized worship, instructing the people to seek out the place God would choose for His name to dwell, which was intended to unify the nation and curb the idolatry they had struggled with in their history. Later, this place was identified as Jerusalem, where the Temple was established as the focal point of Israelite worship.
