Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
When the king heard this, he was absolutely crushed and furious with himself. He immediately started working to save Daniel and spent the entire day until sunset trying everything he could think of to get him out of this mess.
Sometimes the people who care about you will move heaven and earth to protect you, even when their own mistakes put you in danger.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical book of Daniel, King Darius of Persia had been deceived by his officials into signing a decree that prohibited prayer to anyone except the king, as part of a plot to trap Daniel. This led to Daniel, a faithful Jewish exile and high official in the kingdom, being accused of breaking the law when he continued to pray to his God. The king, upon hearing of Daniel's impending punishment, was greatly distressed and worked frantically until sunset to find a way to rescue him.
