And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
The head of the palace staff told Daniel, 'Look, I'm scared of the king, he's the one who decided what you guys should eat and drink. What if you end up looking worse than the other young men your age? Then the king's going to blame me and I could literally lose my head over this.'
Sometimes doing the right thing puts other people in tough spots too, but that doesn't mean we should compromise.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, Daniel and his friends were Jewish exiles in Babylon, taken from Jerusalem after its conquest by King Nebuchadnezzar, and they were being trained for service in the Babylonian court. This included eating the king's specially appointed food and drink to ensure they remained healthy and presentable. The prince of the eunuchs, responsible for their care, feared that if Daniel and his companions looked worse than the other trainees, he would face severe consequences from the king, including the risk of losing his own life.
