But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
But the Jewish leaders who weren't having it got seriously jealous and recruited some sketchy troublemakers from around town. They stirred up a whole mob, caused chaos throughout the city, and went after Jason's house trying to drag Paul and his crew out to face the angry crowd.
When jealousy takes over, people will literally recruit strangers to help them tear you down.
📚 Historical Context
In Acts 17, the Apostle Paul is preaching in Thessalonica, a major city in ancient Macedonia, as part of his second missionary journey, where he shared the gospel in the Jewish synagogue. Some Jews and God-fearing Greeks believed his message that Jesus is the Messiah, but this success sparked envy among those who rejected it. This jealousy led the unbelieving Jews to recruit troublemakers from the marketplace, stir up a riot in the city, and target the house of Jason, where Paul and his companions were staying, in an attempt to drag them before the authorities.
