Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
So Paul stood up right in the middle of Mars Hill and addressed everyone there: 'People of Athens, I can see that you're incredibly religious, like, you take spirituality seriously in every part of your lives.'
Paul didn't come in throwing shade, he started by acknowledging how spiritually minded the Athenians already were.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Acts, Paul is on a missionary journey, preaching the Gospel in various cities, and he arrives in Athens, a major center of Greek philosophy and idolatry. There, he stands before the Areopagus, a council that discussed intellectual and religious matters, and observes the Athenians' numerous idols as evidence of their excessive religious practices. This sets the stage for Paul to respectfully engage with their culture and introduce the truth of the one true God.
