Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.
This is a warning to fake leaders who abandon the people they're supposed to protect. They're going to lose their strength and their sight, their arm will wither away and their right eye will go completely dark.
Leaders who bail on their people will lose the very abilities they need to lead.
📚 Historical Context
Zechariah was a prophet who lived around 520 BC, ministering to the Jewish people after their return from exile in Babylon, urging them to rebuild the temple and remain faithful to God. In Zechariah 11, he uses the imagery of shepherds and flocks as metaphors for leaders and the nation of Israel, highlighting the failures of unfaithful rulers who exploit or abandon their people. This verse specifically warns against a worthless shepherd, possibly alluding to historical leaders like corrupt kings or future false leaders who neglect God's flock.
