And he shall consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled.
He must dedicate to the LORD the full time of his special commitment, and bring a one-year-old lamb as an offering for his wrongdoing. But the days he had already completed don't count anymore, because his special commitment was broken.
This verse explains that when someone breaks their special vow to God, they must start over completely and make an offering to restore their relationship with Him.
📚 Historical Context
In ancient Israel, the Nazirite vow was a voluntary commitment to God that required individuals to live with strict purity rules, such as avoiding alcohol, not cutting their hair, and staying away from corpses, as a sign of dedication. If a Nazirite became defiled during this period, they had to offer a sacrifice, like a year-old lamb, and restart their vow from the beginning, emphasizing the seriousness of maintaining holiness. This practice reflected the broader cultural and religious emphasis on atonement and purity in Israelite society.
