For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
We will not take any land with them on the other side of the Jordan River or beyond it, because our inheritance has already been given to us on this side of the Jordan River, to the east.
The tribes of Reuben and Gad are telling Moses they don't want land west of the Jordan River because they've already received their inheritance on the east side.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes from the negotiations between Moses and the tribes of Reuben and Gad, who wanted to settle in the fertile grazing lands east of the Jordan River rather than cross over with the other tribes into the Promised Land. The Israelites were at the end of their 40-year wilderness journey, and these two tribes (plus half of Manasseh) had large herds and saw that the eastern territory was ideal for livestock.
