Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
From the Israelites' half of the spoils, Moses took one out of every fifty people and animals, and gave them to the Levites who were responsible for taking care of the LORD's tabernacle, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Moses followed God's command to give a portion of the war spoils to the Levites who served at God's tabernacle.
📚 Historical Context
In the Old Testament narrative, this verse is set after the Israelites' victory in the war against the Midianites, as detailed in Numbers 31, where God commanded them to divide the spoils of battle. Moses, following divine instructions, allocated a portion from the people's share, one out of every fifty people and animals, to the Levites, who were dedicated to the service and upkeep of the tabernacle. This arrangement underscored the Levites' special role in Israel's religious life, as they had no tribal land inheritance and relied on such provisions for their sustenance.
