And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;
And I have chosen the Levites from among the Israelites to take the place of all the firstborn children of Israel. Therefore, the Levites belong to me.
God is explaining that He has chosen the entire tribe of Levi to serve Him in place of claiming every firstborn child from all the other tribes of Israel.
📚 Historical Context
After God killed all the firstborn in Egypt but spared Israel's firstborn, He claimed ownership of every firstborn Israelite as His own. However, instead of requiring every family to give up their firstborn son for temple service, God graciously accepted the entire tribe of Levi (descendants of Moses and Aaron) to serve in the tabernacle on behalf of all the firstborn. This arrangement allowed families to keep their firstborn while still honoring God's claim through the Levites' dedicated service.
