And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe in me or honor me as holy in front of the Israelites, you will not be allowed to lead this group of people into the land I have promised to give them.'
God is telling Moses and Aaron that because they failed to trust Him and honor Him publicly, they won't be allowed to enter the Promised Land with the Israelites.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Numbers, the Israelites were wandering in the desert after their exodus from Egypt, facing hardships like a severe lack of water that led to complaints among the people. At a place called Meribah, God instructed Moses to speak to a rock to miraculously provide water, but Moses instead struck the rock twice in anger, which showed a failure to fully trust and obey God's specific command. As a result, God addressed this lack of faith directly to Moses and Aaron, declaring they would not enter the Promised Land as a consequence of not sanctifying Him before the Israelites.
