But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
Only the Levites should serve in the tent of meeting, and they will be responsible for any wrongdoing that happens there. This is a permanent law for all future generations: the Levites will not receive any land inheritance among the people of Israel.
God is establishing that the Levites alone should serve in His sacred tent, and instead of receiving land like other tribes, their inheritance would be their service to God.
📚 Historical Context
In the time of Moses, during the Israelites' wilderness journey after their exodus from Egypt, God designated the Levites as the tribe responsible for the maintenance and service of the Tabernacle, the mobile sanctuary where God's presence resided among the people. Unlike the other tribes who were allotted land as their inheritance, the Levites were to depend solely on God and the tithes from the Israelites for their livelihood, emphasizing their full dedication to sacred duties. This arrangement was established as a permanent law to prevent the Levites from being distracted by earthly possessions and to highlight their unique role in representing God's holiness.
