Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
Did I give birth to all these people? Did I father them? So why are you telling me to carry them close to my heart, like a nursing father carries a baby, all the way to the land you promised to give their ancestors?
Moses is asking God why he should have to care for the Israelites like a parent when he didn't bring them into being.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Numbers, the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt, grumbling about their lack of food and other hardships, which led to widespread discontent. Moses, as their appointed leader, felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of guiding and caring for such a complaining multitude, and in this verse, he expresses his frustration to God through rhetorical questions. This moment highlights the immense pressure on Moses as he interceded for the people on their journey to the Promised Land.
