These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;
These are the people from the province who returned from exile - the ones who had been taken captive when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon carried them away. They came back to Jerusalem and Judah, each person returning to their own hometown.
This verse introduces a list of Jewish exiles who returned home to rebuild their lives after being held captive in Babylon for decades.
📚 Historical Context
In the 6th century BC, the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem and deported many Jews into captivity, an event known as the Babylonian exile. This period of exile lasted about 70 years, after which the Persian Empire, under King Cyrus, issued a decree allowing the Jews to return and rebuild their homeland. In Nehemiah's time, around 444 BC, the returning exiles were carefully registering and resettling in their original cities as part of restoring the nation's structure and worship.
