And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
The axe is already at the base of the trees, ready to swing. Any tree that doesn't produce good fruit gets cut down and thrown in the fire.
Time's up, either you're bearing fruit or you're getting cut down.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness near the Jordan River, calling people to repent and prepare for the coming of Jesus as the Messiah, drawing from Old Testament prophetic traditions. He used the metaphor of an axe at the root of trees to illustrate God's imminent judgment on those who fail to live righteously, much like how unproductive trees were cut down in ancient agricultural practices. This message was delivered during a time of social and political tension under Roman rule, urging a return to genuine faith.
