And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
I will bring war against you to punish you for breaking my agreement with you. When you gather together in your cities for protection, I will send disease among you, and you will be handed over to your enemies.
God is warning that breaking His covenant will result in war, disease, and defeat by enemies as consequences for disobedience.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes from the book of Leviticus, where God outlines the blessings and curses tied to the Israelites' obedience or disobedience to His covenant. It was given to the ancient Israelites through Moses in the wilderness, as a warning about the potential consequences of turning away from God's laws, such as invasion and disease, to emphasize the seriousness of their commitment. These promises and threats were meant to guide the nation as they prepared to settle in the Promised Land.
