For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.
Anyone who does not humble themselves and fast on that day will be completely removed from their community.
God is saying that anyone who doesn't participate in the Day of Atonement by fasting and humbling themselves will be expelled from the community of God's people.
📚 Historical Context
This verse is part of God's instructions about the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar when the people would fast, pray, and seek forgiveness for their sins. Being 'cut off from among his people' was a serious punishment that meant losing one's place in the covenant community of Israel, essentially being exiled or excommunicated.
