And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.
On that very same day, you must announce a holy gathering for yourselves. You shall not do any regular work on that day. This will be a permanent law for you and your families in all the places where you live, for all generations to come.
God is establishing a permanent holy day where His people must gather together and rest from their regular work.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Leviticus, God was providing Moses with detailed instructions for the Israelites on how to observe the various feasts and holy days as part of their covenant relationship with Him. This specific verse falls within the description of the Feast of Weeks, a harvest festival where the people were commanded to hold a sacred assembly, refrain from ordinary work, and treat it as a permanent statute for all generations. These laws helped the Israelites maintain their identity as God's chosen people by emphasizing rest, worship, and dependence on His provision.
