And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
But anything that lives in the seas and rivers that doesn't have fins and scales, any creature that moves in the water, you must consider disgusting and avoid.
God is telling the Israelites that all water creatures without fins and scales are forbidden food and should be avoided completely.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, the book of Leviticus was given to the Israelites through Moses as part of the Mosaic Law shortly after their exodus from Egypt, providing guidelines for holy living in a covenant relationship with God. These dietary laws, including the classification of certain sea creatures as unclean, were designed to promote physical health, ritual purity, and separation from the idolatrous practices of neighboring nations. This helped the Israelites maintain their distinct identity as God's chosen people in the ancient Near East.
