The LORD hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.
God turned his back on his own altar and couldn't stand to look at his sanctuary anymore. He let enemies take over the palace walls, and now they're making all kinds of noise in God's house, but instead of worship and celebration, it's chaos and destruction.
Sometimes even God steps back when his people have gone too far.
📚 Historical Context
Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah in the wake of the Babylonian invasion and destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, a catastrophic event that marked the end of the Kingdom of Judah and the beginning of the Babylonian exile. This book mourns the devastation of the city, including the Temple, which was the central place of worship and God's presence among His people, as a direct result of Judah's persistent idolatry and disobedience to God's covenant. In this verse, it vividly describes how God withdrew His protection, allowing enemy forces to profane the sacred spaces that were once filled with worship.
