Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Now hand over to us those wicked men who are in Gibeah, so we can execute them and remove this evil from Israel. But the people of Benjamin refused to listen to their fellow Israelites.
The other tribes of Israel demanded that Benjamin hand over the men who committed a terrible crime, but Benjamin refused to cooperate with their brothers.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Judges, during a chaotic period in Israel's history when there was no central king and people often acted on their own impulses, a grave atrocity took place in the city of Gibeah where men from the tribe of Benjamin committed a violent assault and murder against a Levite's concubine. This event sparked outrage among the other Israelite tribes, who assembled to demand that Benjamin surrender the guilty parties to uphold justice and remove evil from their midst. However, Benjamin's refusal to comply escalated the situation into a full-scale civil war, highlighting the dangers of unchecked sin and tribal loyalty.
